AoY Podcast #140 – Anime Grindhouse Double Feature (Alita: Battle Angel / Gundam NT Review)

Also known as: “Do dem robot titties got milk in ’em?”

And also: “The Sun Devils are heading a little closer to the sun…”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 4:54:19)

We could’t go through the month of March without posting up something for you guys, so we’ve decided to just bunch everything into a super sized podcast double feature of Alita: Battle Angel and Gundam NT.

(0:00 – 1:02:10) Review: Alita: Battle Angel – Hitting off one of the super anime type movies for the month of February is the acclaimed Alita film, which did not get the type of negative feedback like Ghost in the Shell got a while ago. Both Dustin and Jonn go into the film and compare the film setting to what was used from the manga/anime. This also gets them talking about other fine films from Robert Rodriguez, the future of upcoming “soon to be” anime-to-live action films, don’t ever buy a Mitsubishi Mirage and much more.

(1:02:10 – 2:32:03) Closing Remarks from early March: These are more recent discussions from when we recorded this segment at the beginning of this month, to include topics such as Dustin going to AgamaCon and SC Comicon, chilling with Tiffany Grant (EDIT: Check our Review section for our Tiffany Grant interview because the audio link to the Tiffany Grant interview showed up on iTunes instead of our real podcast episode, so hopefully by removing the link that was here before that should get things fixed), getting to meet WWF wrasslers, Dustin chair breaks mid-recording, the Meson saga update, the epic Joe Rogan/Alex Jones Return episode talk(aka SCREW YOU JONES, WE OUT DID THE LENGTH OF THAT PODCAST SUCKAHHH!), Dustin and Josh troll Ghost on his new show, RIP Jan Micheal Vincent and Keith Flint and much more.

(2:32:03 – 2:33:14) Rightstuf Promo

(2:33:14 – 3:17:30) Review: Gundam NT Narrative – This was recorded at the end of February, which cinematic time wise it’s what came next in theaters after Alita. This particular film was a first for Gundam in America, since it’s the only Gundam property to make it to the big screen (and did so successfully than say another film), but was meet rather poorly, at least to Dustin point of view when he was awake during the film. Both Jonn and Dustin had different ideas on what the film could’ve been, which Dustin would’ve been fine with a Kelly’s Heroes Gundam type movie the way it should’ve been. This also discuss the biggest Unicorn podcasters in the past few years, some Alita talk and much more.

(3:17:30 – 4:54:19) Closing Remarks: Only a handful of things to discuss in this one, but one in particular just made us a pure VICtim to the online drama surrounding the whole #KickVic fiasco. This also includes shady Filipino eBay people, our thoughts on that Green New Deal bouncing around out there, RightStuf Gundam talk, what would America be like if John McAfee got elected as our next president and much more.

Music Selection:

OP 1 – And now our feature presentation…

ED 1 – RIP Keith Flint…

OP 2 – There’s a girl with a heart, as big as a Gundam…

ED – That deaf, dumb and snot nosed kid sure plays a mean Shogi…

This show has:

What Dustin asked Sgt. Slaughter about in WWF History…

Totally worth the money…

RIP Keith Flint/ Jan Micheal Vincent

The best story arc of Funimation corporate history…

AoY Podcast #129 – E3 2018

Also known as: “We….could get a Pulgasari 2….”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 1:56:00)

Another year of E3 means another year of hype, rants, and the strange tangents from the hosts. So get plugged in, get angry, get excited and get lost in the world of the 2018 E3 episode!

(0:00 – 46:25) E3 2018 – Overall the hosts thought this show was rather meh when you balance out the good, the bad and the mediocrity of E3. This goes into Dustin and Jonn summing up the conferences from EA, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and others that caught their interest. Both hosts go into their thoughts on games that will be coming out that were either announced or showed more gamplay too them at the expo. Included in this segment is making fun of the Xbox system names, how Cyberpunk 2077 is the best announcement, game footage censorship on Disney XD, hipsters and them making theoretical avacado toast food trucks and much more.

(46:25 – 1:02:05) Video Game Closing Remarks – Here Dustin and Jonn talk about what they’ve been playing recently, with Dustin trying out Night Trap and beating it for the first time ever on the PS4, who played the mom on Secret World of Alex Mack, a real movie called Night Trap with Robert Davi and Micheal Ironside,  thoughts on the Goldeneye PS3 game, Jonn playing games on the Switch like Zelda and Sonic Forces, Hokuto no Gotoku getting an American release and more.

(1:02:05 – 1:56:00) Closing Remarks – This should come to no surprise that both hosts spend about equal if not greater time on this segment, with discussions on how Trump saved the world with North Korea, the South Carolina Primary Election coverage, American politics rant, Archer latest season sucking, and much more!!

Music Selection:

OP – Game of the Year (whenever it comes out!)

ED – Our nights are heating up…

Zinger – You’re Fired!

AoY Podcast #126 – Outlaws vs. Cowboys: The Bebop Stars of Space

Also known as: “The Beau Billingslea Power Hour on Toonami!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 3:05:30)

We talk about the two biggest titans in the galaxay among anime fans in the early 2000’s, where we review Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop!

(0:00 – 45:40) Review: Outlaw Star – This podcast episode is the historic record of the pinnacle of what was important to anime fans on Cartoon Network starting from 2001 and beyond. Outlaw Star was a big anime among the viewers of Toonami, and Dustin heard about this show for years until he finally saw the series shown on Toonami recently for the first time. Both hosts Jonn and Dustin and special guest Daft chime in to talk about the overview of the series with some spoilers thrown in. This also includes how its vital importance that Jonn dad tells Jonn in the call that the dog is eating cheese off the floor, the stupidity of Transformers cartoons, Outlaw Star merch in America, FLCL revival talks, will Hamtaro be on Toonami for Aprils Fools Night? (as of this writing, Adult Swim showed FLCL Alternative subtitled on TV, followed by Mind Game, and a bunch of the regular block airing in the same format, because I’m writing this about 1am on April Fools night – Dustin), Toonami censorship on TV and much more.

(45:40 – 1:39:00) Review: Cowboy Bebop – This episode marks the 20th anniversary since the anime first aired on TV Tokyo, and how it later showed up that late summer on the new Adult Swim block on Cartoon Network in 2001. Both hosts recant how much of an impact Bebop has had on them as anime fans all these years later, including the merch that’s out there (you can find the pdf of the Bebop Anime Guides here at my blog – Dustin). This goes into account what particular episode got Dustin involved in Bebop, our top 3 Bebop episodes, the TV edits, and a whole lot more!

(1:39:00 – 3:05:30) Closing Remarks – This is chock full of material that covers for the month of March since we last recorded, including how Love that Goku got social services on his butt, Linkara leaving TGWTG and the twitter thread full of the company drama, Meson in dire need, the fully funded Kickstarter for Gunsmith Cats, The Toys That Made Us Netflix Documentary series, Dustin con talks on Toylanta and SC Comic Con, RIP Toys R Us/southern food stores/Return of KB Toys, the Mystery of Miami Mike finally solved by The Anime Nostalgia Podcast and the stupid weeaboo drama that follows on the ANN Forums, Dustin mentions his thoughts on Pacific Rim 2, and much more!

ED – The Miami Mike Jam…

What better way to end out 2016 but to travel back long ago, in a galaxy far far away. This time Dustin and Jonn are joined by previous guests Daft and Vekou to talk about Star Wars: Rogue One.

(0:00 – 1:07:30) Review – Star Wars: Rogue One Review – The council of nerds have all gathered to talk about the recent Star Wars film, which seems to be divided in the fandom of who likes and dislikes this movie. All hosts mention the movies strengths and weaknesses, as well as talk about other Star Wars material. This of course gets us talking about story lines in video games, nerd conversations on Clerks movie levels, and much more.

(1:07:30 – 3:02:44) Post-Christmas Holiday Closing Remarks – A lot has happened over the past month, and the hosts have something to say about it. Aside from talking about what we all got for Christmas, we give RIP shout outs to Alan Thicke, Carrie Fisher and George Michael passings. We also mention convention talk from Daft’s North East Comic Con review and seeing the Hanna Barbera exhibit, where as Dustin went to experience what happens when a high school puts together a comic con in the middle of nowhere. There is also discussion of a book about Tommy Wiseau, talk of terrible and cool animation industry people, Dustin desire to meet Jerry Beck and Fred Patton, abandoned Flinstone parks, the recent ramblings of Peter Fay, who to ban from our chat, and much more.

Music Selection:

OP – I’m sure people wish 2016 can be blown up with the Death Star already…

AoY Podcast #89 – South Carolina Comic Con / Anime Boston 2016 Review

3427

Also known as: “MAKE ANIME BOSTON GREAT AGAIN!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 3:25:56)

Well, convention season has once again started up, and your hosts are taking their journeys to cons opposite of the Mason Dixon line. Dustin decided to avoid the usual NashiCon this year to go with its closer and hands down “most impressive anime con” during the same weekend in April as Nashi, and that was the South Carolina Comic Con. We also have our returning co-host Daft and Cloud to talk about their time at Anime Boston.

(0:00 – 1:04:32) Con Report A: South Carolina Comic Con – But wait, why is a comic con considered the best anime con? Well there’s a simple answer, its because Dustin has seen the light that comic cons happen to cater to his anime needs than a local anime con cannot do. After finding a Dancouga, Iczer 1 and some other figures at the local comic con, these seem to be the holy grail of items that appeal to the old anime fans at heart than seeing the same anime bullcrap merch at these so called “anime conventions” that Dustin keeps going to over and over every year. Also, NashiCon didn’t have a schedule to meet Tony Oliver, so no way our podcast con traveler was gonna risk driving further out of his way for no solid autograph return. This was no lone journey, as Dustin was accompanied by Dori on the way to the con, so that made it even more fun.

In terms of Closing Remarks, Jonn and Dustin talked about how they put the hammer down on whiny cosplayers on the Anime Boston forum, which lead to some serious Donald Trump-like troll hijinks to burn some bridges with a con that maybe one day the hosts might go to. The legacy of ZeekdaPhreek shall live on. We also mention how Dustin got his own Initial D Arcade Stage cabinet, the return of Chris Chan and TCR Ghost, and much more.

(1:04:32 – 1:06:47) Podcast Promo’s – AWO seems to be getting over their tormented Initial D review, with their latest one being about Knights of Sidonia. The Daily Anime Podcast might have been quiet for…. a good while, still check them out. Come’on Jeff, WHERE DID YA GO? On the upside, Dave and Joel come out of their per-month retirement to bring you more Jojo’s, cuz that’s what the kids wanna hear.

(1:06:47 – 3:25:56) Con Report B: Anime Boston – This is clearly the longer part of this podcast, which makes up for the first part in lacking content. Speaking of hijinks, Daft decides to go to the con as currently-now-front runner Donald Trump to make sure Anime Boston is made great again. This also goes into detail on how Cloud’s Precure panel went, Daft going to panels like Bad Anime Bad and playing Evangelion pachinko machines, where to find food and how to get drunk the Daft way, the issue with the long lines at the con, dissing on Geek Nights, Toonami and cartoons talk and much more.

Music Selection:

OP 1 – Comic con is kinda a magical place… sort of…

OP 2 – Daft and Cloud roll into the Boston the only way they know how…

ED – Daft and Cloud take on Anime Boston the only way they know how…
