It’s an Alvis Day miracle to have another yearly Christmas Special ready to go! So this year Jonn and Dustin talk about another miracle of an anime that we never thought would be fansubbed, but it came to fruition. This year we review Penguin’s Memory.
(0:00 – 35:15) Alvis Day Review: Penguins Memory – This is an anime that has been mentioned on this podcast in the past many times, but it was only a matter of time before certain fansubbers finally got around to making this anime to the anime fandom public. It’s like the movie The Deer Hunter, but with penguins, only it’s not really The Deer Hunter. Penguins Memory is a unique film based off the premise off Suntory Beer ads mixed in with the common ethos of 1980’s Vietnam War movies at the time. It’s truly a film that anime fans need to check out eventually. Along with both hosts staying on topic for once, there is the off topic discussions of how CW superhero shows are trash, the passing of Hiromi Tsuru and other anime featuring animals fighting in wars.
(35:15 – 1:39:35) Closing Remarks – Typical banter follows this segment with Chris Chan latest stupidity on video and stuff about Ghost from TCR. Included is how Dustin has finally graduated university (since he’s been in school since three podcasts ago), the failings of Roy Moore, the US soldier that defected to North Korea died recently, how dumb people Master thesis’s can be, Thor 3 and Justice League discussion, upcoming movies in 2018, the Disney/Fox merger and a whole lot more. After about 5 months of not putting out any con coverages, Dustin thought we can just double up and OD our listeners with two major cons in one episode with Animazement and Anime Weekend Atlanta.
(0:00 – 2:16:45) Animazement 2017 Review – Do people other than this podcast talk about cons 5 months after they happen? Well who knows, but it’s coming out now finally! Of course, this doesn’t go into Animazement immediately, not when Jonn had something to say about not going to see the failed assassination of Jason David Frank at Phoenix Comic Con. Jonn also talks about the dumb weapons policies to “protect” attendees that are not JDF and Robotech. It’s still about roughly 30 or so minutes in that Dustin talks about his con experience at Animazement. Included in this review is stories of the inside world of Limited Run Games, seeing your old teenhood house for the first time in years, how Strafe is inferior to Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, nerds who fail at hitting on girls, Justin Roland stories, people who bring their cats to cons, Antifa v. Street Preachers, not seeing this years Anime Hell, the History of Animazement, meeting forum members IRL, closing remarks of Timbox/Chris Chan and much more.
(2:16:45 – 4:49:07) AWA 2017 Review – Here’s a con that happened within a month that we can get a decent review out in time. This was Dustin first time going to AWA, and based on his 2 day experience, it’s a con worth going back too. This of course comes with meeting anime fan legends like Dave Merrill, Daryl Surat, Walter Amos, Neil Nadelman, and meeting new fans while there as well. This is also another instance where rooming with another forum member makes the con a better experience, and even doing a podcast drunk with them is also fun. Included is how Hell is done at AWA, old school anime dubs, buying up anime vinyl records and playing them on this recording, and more. Closing Remarks are about how the podcast is trying to monitize, the Las Vegas shooting/gun control laws discussion (there’s a part I meant to say was an amendment but said constitution by mistake. So if you caught that, my bad), Chris Chan relationship ends (before it ever got started), Jonn squeaky chair chimes in, Final Fantasy games, Dustin owning an SNES Classic and much more!

(0:00 – 45:00) A Super Shibuya Anime Culture Review: Super Gals – If you want to test the standards of any 2000’s anime comedy series can still hold up in today’s anime fandom, just leave it up to podcast reviewers to see how far they can stand a show before calling it quits. This is more of a review of the first two episodes of Super Gals than it is a whole series of Super Gals. Let’s not kid ourselves, these two episodes gave both hosts everything they needed to know about this anime. Super Gals is a parody of 1990’s Japanese fashion culture that lies somewhere between Kogal girls, Ganguro girls and fighting for justice because you’re daddy is a police chief. This also gets into talking about how Jonn has too much Hamtaro on his hard drive, defending Gundam 0083, if Super Gals can be used for CIA torture on terrorism, music history of Para Para, past ADV properties and much more.
(45:00 – 1:33:12) Closing Remarks: This is the hosts talking about the latest Chris Chan stuff and his supposed girlfriend/being on the NEWS AGAIN, Trump vs. NFL vs. First Amendment rights, how Toys R Us filed Chapter 11 (better article on that found from the angriest otaku out there), old and terrible podcasts, Cowboy Bebop vs. Outlaw Star, shootings in Tennessee, and Dustin trying to chime in while having the hiccups. Dustin and Jonn go into a bit of detail as to why that obvious conclusion came to be, but it doesn’t take an idiot to figure that out. We talk about the games that we look forward too that weren’t announced, dumb DLC add-ons and more.
