AoY Podcast #118 – MegaConPod GO! (Animazement / AWA 2017)

Also known as: “Mom, this Pie is Totally AIRWOLF!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time – 4:49:07)

After about 5 months of not putting out any con coverages, Dustin thought we can just double up and OD our listeners with two major cons in one episode with Animazement and Anime Weekend Atlanta.

(0:00 – 2:16:45) Animazement 2017 Review – Do people other than this podcast talk about cons 5 months after they happen? Well who knows, but it’s coming out now finally! Of course, this doesn’t go into Animazement immediately, not when Jonn had something to say about not going to see the failed assassination of Jason David Frank at Phoenix Comic Con. Jonn also talks about the dumb weapons policies to “protect” attendees that are not JDF and Robotech. It’s still about roughly 30 or so minutes in that Dustin talks about his con experience at Animazement. Included in this review is stories of the inside world of Limited Run Games, seeing your old teenhood house for the first time in years, how Strafe is inferior to Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, nerds who fail at hitting on girls, Justin Roland stories, people who bring their cats to cons, Antifa v. Street Preachers, not seeing this years Anime Hell, the History of Animazement, meeting forum members IRL, closing remarks of Timbox/Chris Chan and much more.

(2:16:45 – 4:49:07) AWA 2017 Review – Here’s a con that happened within a month that we can get a decent review out in time. This was Dustin first time going to AWA, and based on his 2 day experience, it’s a con worth going back too. This of course comes with meeting anime fan legends like Dave Merrill, Daryl Surat, Walter Amos, Neil Nadelman, and meeting new fans while there as well. This is also another instance where rooming with another forum member makes the con a better experience, and even doing a podcast drunk with them is also fun. Included is how Hell is done at AWA, old school anime dubs, buying up anime vinyl records and playing them on this recording, and more. Closing Remarks are about how the podcast is trying to monitize, the Las Vegas shooting/gun control laws discussion (there’s a part I meant to say was an amendment but said constitution by mistake. So if you caught that, my bad), Chris Chan relationship ends (before it ever got started), Jonn squeaky chair chimes in, Final Fantasy games, Dustin owning an SNES Classic and much more!

AoY Podcast #86 – The RightStuf Product/Spectre Review

We can officially announce that we have once again sold out to “The Man,” particularly the RightStuf Man. This time we have a pretty full show of Jonn and Dustin reviewing RightStuf! Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam Blu-ray Sets, Space Adventure Cobra DVD Set and the latest Bond movie Spectre.

(0:00 – 52:08) The RightStuf! Product Review – Gundam Blu-Ray’s and Cobra DVD Set: After about taking a month for both hosts to get their products from RightStuf!, they can both talk about the special features and quality of the packages. Jonn and Dustin talk about mostly the 30th Anniversary interviews with the Gundam staff on the second blu-ray collection of Mobile Suit Gundam, which is just laughing at how old men can still hold grudges from a show that’s 37 years old now. Both host’s talk about the Buichi Terasawa interview from the Cobra DVD’s and its packaging, and our own review of that show will come out in due time. We also mention general Gundam talk, other mech shows, Terasawa and his Big Booty loves, SJW v. not-anime-yet, being praised in class for being a nerd, and more.

(52:08 – 53:19) RightStuf! Bootleg Promo: Our podcast never got an “official” promo from RighStuf!, so it was best to make up our own for starters. Right now (as of March 5th), Gundam and Vertical had a sale, which might still be going on? We want to thank Vanessa Williams for providing the background song for our promo, and we would really like to thank her lawyers for not finding out about this podcast because we used such song that would fit with this RightStuf! promo without “official” consideration from her record label. Now moving on…

(53:19 – 1:19:35) Movie Review – Spectre: Here we have an example of a review seen by one person who saw it the day it came out, and other who saw it the other day. The time gap is large enough to show that the former forgot most of the movie, leaving the latter to pick up the slack of events that happened. Long story short, both host made this review short and to the point, and talked about other James Bond related things. I mean, its been 3 years since both hosts talked about James Bond, so hopefully the next film comes a bit sooner.

(1:19:35 – 2:14:40) Closing Remarks (a.k.a Dustin disses on Initial D haters): Like the usual formula, Chris Chan gets brought up to talk about how he self promotes people he doesn’t like without knowing it, which then leads to Dustin throwing down his Initial D street cred against Anime World Order review of Initial D, and tries to answer that why question the AWO hosts asked on their podcast. You could say Dustin cranks up his hypothetical Toyota AE86 for our 86th podcast, because that is how fate would have it! This of course leads to people we know on twitter who are having a hard time in life, former AIM and Toonzone drama, and more.

Music Selection:

OP1 – We’re kinda the new kids on the block when it comes to product reviews…

OP2 – James Bond is Back!!!

ED – If podcasting was like the Fast and Furious movies, we are the Paul Walker to the AWO Dwayne Johnson…

This show has:

The next James Bond…perhaps?

What feels like the start of every Roger Moore Bond film…

This could happen to the anime community… maybe?

AoY Podcast #80 – Ghost in the Shell 20th Anniversary Review (w/ Gerald Rathkolb)

b5-ghostshell

Also known as: “Because porn doesn’t need plot, never does…”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 1:43:27)

On November 18th, 1995, a certain anime film came out that changed the way we look at anime to this day. As anime fans, we owe it to a particular film for shaping how anime has been distributed and the limits on what it can become. We had to call in one of the big guns of anime podcasting, Gerald Rathkolb of the Anime World Order podcast, to discuss the impact that Ghost in the Shell left on the world since its release 20 years ago…

(0:00 – 16:40) Portrait of an Otaku – Gerald Rathkolb: Before we ever got into discussing Ghost in the Shell, we get to hear the backstory of how Gerald became an anime fan in the Virgin Islands. This brings is to know how much someone can hate windsurfing, what it took to own anime at your local Sam Goody, hating on Hanna-Barbera cartoons, how to FEEL THE ANIME POWER!, how the recorder isn’t a real instrument, and more.

(16:40 – 1:28:35) Review – Ghost in the Shell: Gerald takes us down memory lane going back 20 years at this point, where he explains how Ghost in the Shell affected the anime community at the time, and what brought in people to knowing anime. This of course gets us to talk about the Ghost in the Shell manga and other works by Masamune Shirow, and even say something about all the works of what came after Ghost in the Shell movie under the same name. We to spoil a bit of the film in terms of thematic elements of what Mamoru Oshii was putting into the film, which might actually make watching Ghost in the Shell much easier to watch and understand. Gerald pretty much stole the show, but both host just let Gerald tell his stories of high cyberpunk adventure. We also once again bring back the need for you listener to read Brian Ruh book. This of course gets off topic on the good ol’ days of anime being only sold at brick and mortar stores, discussing bloody Italian movies, how Digimon should be with the rest of the anime titles in your local video store, Mamoru Oshii as a director in general, Rumiko Takahashi is a HACK MANGA AUTHOR! THE TRUTH of Evangelion and Christianity, live action anime talk (here we go again…), Harmony Gold hate, Sci-Fi Channel anime censorship, and so much more…

(1:28:35 – 1:43:27) Closing Remarks: Gerald vents on how great Metal Gear Solid V is, which also led to Konami hate, how free to play games are terrible for you, Chris Chan and his transgender amiibos scam, Dustin getting a wisdom tooth pulled, and Dustin also calling out Gerald on his Giant Gorg review.

We should also note, Dustin was able to post up some Ghost in the Shell related things on the internet recently, where he posted the latest blog post at the Anime of Yesteryear Blog of the Animerica Ghost in the Shell issue, and also did a write up at his new blog The Cyber Funker mentioning briefly the impact of Ghost in the Shell. So check those links out!

AoY Podcast #79 – Con-O-Ween Special (Comikaze & BanzaiCon 2015 Report)

Stan-Lee-s-Comikaze-ExpoAlso known as: “Dude, it’s Ultraman, you know how to say it!”

Halloween is celebrated differently by people every year. So what better way for the podcast hosts to have their own different Halloween experiences than to travel to different conventions across America. This time we have Dustin spending a few hours at Banzaicon, and Jonn spending the day at Comikaze.

(0:00 – 48:49) Con-O-Ween Part 1: Comikaze at Los Angeles, California – Jonn and his dad trekked from Arizona to the golden state to hit up Comikaze. Jonn talked about getting exhibitor passes from a local comic book shop, SJW tumblr hate speech, how Stan Lee promotes himself at his own con, the differences between comic vs. anime conventions, comic book vs. video game collecting, Jojo’s talk, partied out Ninja Turtles, the wrong directors for live action anime adaptations, anime to live action talk (mostly about Akira), Demon City Shinjuku, Harmony Gold hate, and much more.

(48:49 – 51:06) Podcast Promo’s – We want to give a personal shout out to Alpha Counter, as their latest episode #150 might be their final podcast episode. But in tribute to this, Dustin brought back an old friend to wish them a proper farewell. Fast Karate should be back eventually with new stuff, but not after streaming twitch things. Anime World Order decides that their next episode is to cover Initial D (“BUT WAIT DARYL, YOU TOLD ME YEARS AGO IN A PAST EPISODE COMMENTS THAT NO ONE ON THE AWO CREW WOULD EVER REVIEW INITIAL D BECAUSE YOU GUYS ALL HATED IT!! OH WAIT, SOMEONE PAID YOU TO REVIEW IT? NOW I SEE WHAT IT REALLY TAKES TO COVER SHUICHI SHIGENO GRAND MANGA MASTERPIECE CGI ANIMOO SERIES!!” – Inner 18 year old “die hard Initial D fanboy attitude” Dustin responding out of spite).

(51:06 – 1:36:50) Con-O-Ween Part 2: Banzaicon at Colombia, South Carolina – Across the great America’s, Dustin was taking his sweet time to get to Banzaicon, which resulted in describing what a convention looks like past 7:30 pm on a Saturday Halloween night. This of course contains how to sucker  convince the con staff to let you and your “panelist” partner in for cheap, playing some well deserved Initial D, guests at the con that Dustin never saw, 1990’s USA Network cartoons, Ani-Monday talk, how to give a yaoi panel some late night competition, and much more.

(1:36:50 – 2:05:27) Closing Remarks – This just continues into Chris Chan PSA on Halloween trans talk, Dustin explains his experience with audibly reading the Lensmen series, Dustin jacks Golgo 13 M-16, book to movie adaptations, and much more.

Get ready to stare into your alien scouters in order too resurrect an old enemy, because this time Dustin and Jonn review the ULTIMATE REZUREKT’N of Dragonball Z: Resurrection of F!

(0:00 – 48:49) Blockbuster Anime Review – Dragonball Z: Resurrection of F: As of this recording, this latest Dragonball Z movie is ranked 9th according to this list of top grossing anime movies of all time. Both hosts were able to see the films and have some good remakrs to say about it. Despite Toei being the cheapest anime company out there (more so than CPM’s legacy), they’re able to continue drawing in more of the western audience into theaters to see a Japanese cartoon for being the most well known Japanese cartoon to ever exist. Other than some spoilers to recap the movie, Jonn has to explain to Dustin the entire complexity of DBZ canon vs. non-canon to him. This of course brings us to talking about One Piece and the real TRUTH behind the Garlic Jr. Saga… well not really.

(48:49 – 1:30:28) The Republican National Closing Remarks Debate: For some unknown reason, Jonn and Dustin sit down and dissect the big Republican Debate back in August, and really just talk about the great mystery on how number one real estate NYC gangsta Donald Trump is ahead of every politician ever. Dustin also says RIP to a notable anime fan of his day, Robert W. Gibson, which you can check out his convention stories over at Hokuto no Fogie, and last year’s interviews with Tim Eldred and Anime World Order, to see what it really was like to be an early anime fan. Also stay tuned for the “zinger” after the song for Daft’s great plan to open up a “board game bar,” and how geek bars might be bad idea’s all around. All this and much more in this weeks episode…
