In true AoY podcasting tradition, when episodes keep piling up, it’s time to bundle them all together a-la Thanksgiving Special! Were gonna give you listeners a 3-in-1 Bundleru special with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Dragonball Super, and Primal!

(0:00 – 01:04:00) Serving #1: A Stand Alone Complex (sorta) Review – Everything in this write-up was written sometime last month, but better late than never. This review is more of a revelation on what Dustin has been missing out on for the past 15 years by finally getting around to watching both Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series. We cover what we can remember of the show, so expect there to be some spoilers afoot. This also gets into where in the hell Jonn was recording from in GodKnowsWhere, Texas, how Smore and their treatment of Galaxy Express 999, how Hash is a terrible Southern Delight, LIVE USER FAN MAIL!, and much more…

(34:20 – 45:40) “Hold On! I’ll call your right back!” Music Interlude – Jonn spirit journey was cut short and he cut out from the call, so DJ ZeekDaPhreek steps up to play 80’s metal music like Judas Priest and W.A.S.P.

(01:04:00 – 02:02:07) Closing Remarks 1 – This consists of Dustin saying goodbye to a very close friend, RIP Robert Axelrod, SouthEast Gaming Expo talk, changes in podcast hosts over at the ANNCast, #KickVic court discussion, how AniTubers are trash and much more…

(02:02:07 – 02:59:50) Serving#2: The overly late Halloween Special that is now a Thanksgiving Special – Primal and Dragonball Super – Primal is by far the best thing Tartakovsky has done, although Samurai Jack fans will beg to differ with that statement, but screw em! After discussing how great of show with the least amount of episodes shown so far, we then go into DB Super with a longer amount of episodes show that still had a good story in the end. This also goes into Dragonball in general and much more!

(02:59:50 – 04:15:04) Closing Remarks 2 – This includes the #KickVic/WeebWarz saga, Dustin part of Bmar Ghost Trolling Colab 3, Middle East politics and politics all around, Trolling AOC at a Town Hall, The American Moloch religion, Timbox new movie script Tim Zarus, Jonn internet acting crappy, Bible/Catholic talk and much more!

1995 called saying it wants new versions of their hit movies that year, which got the hosts talking about Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell… from this year.

(0:00 – 1:05:08) Review: Power Rangers – Dustin and Jonn and guests Cloud and Daft join together to dawn our power suits and get ready to take on this movie full force with our MegaZords all in the name of friendship! Well, not really, but it did warrant a good discussion (specially when Daft showed up 30 minutes later). Power Rangers was a film Daft hated to love, and Dustin saw it as a movie he loved to hate. There are spoilers afoot in breaking down scenes that were just stupid to begin with, as well as how twitter won’t shut up about it being this pro-ELGEBETE diverse crap fest. This warrants other Haim Saban discussions and other stuff, including Dustin trying to get away from a devoted fan rambling off his Power Rangers love to him at a Hot Topic.

(1:05:08 – 1:06:18) Promo: Just slipping in a quick Anime Cart and RightStuf! promo for you guys to drop all your dough on their websites. (Happening RIGHT NOW, you can get a FREE Naruto Headband with any purchase from animecart.com. Even though in a previous episode I stated about dumb teens going there to get headbands, I just got one, because its FREE! so that makes me feel a little better about getting one to act like a “highly functioning autistic ‘narutard'”, and you should too. Use our discount, it does work! – Dustin)

(1:06:18 – 1:55:15) Review: Ghost in the Shell – Just as Daft was more forgiving of Power Rangers, Dustin was even more so with Ghost in the Shell, despite the twitter anti-whitewashing hate machine taking credit that they movie failed. Its been over a year since we talked about Ghost in the Shell, and if you want our 1995 review of that, it can be found in this giant link in this text. Although not a perfect film, Dustin explains his reason why this film shouldn’t have gotten the specific negative attention it got when they’re other factors wrong with the movie, but it was mostly complaining about the haters of this film online. It’s more got to Dustin trying to defend the film for the things it did right, which was more than what the internet was going to give it credit for. Also, mics are being thrown down in anger, just saying. Dustin also wrote an article for The Odyssey about this film, so give that a read.

(1:55:15 – 2:18:35) Closing Remarks: There is still more discussion on haters and the internet, as well Cloud talking a little about Anime Boston, Dustin hating that UNC won the NCAA tourney, Ghost from TCR going sober, The People v. Jontron, are pets racists?, and finding your brothers anime items in storage to claim as your own. All this and much more in this weeks episode. Also fair warning, Dustin mic is super loud for some reason, but that will be fixed next episode.

Music Selection:

OP1 – Power Rangers Theme by A Robot (or Dustin’s good friend)

ED – Dustin will try and forget about this film, but doubt it

OP2 – We dive hard in this ghostly landscape of a film…

2015 is over, and now we move onto the year of 2016. 2015 was a pretty fun year from the podcast group, especially when Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out to end it all. So this years podcast special is about our hosts giving their take on the recent flick from a galaxy far away galaxy…

(0:00 – 1:11:15 ) Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Review – In previous podcast episodes, Dustin and Jonn seemed a bit skeptical to how this new Star Wars film will turn out. With both parties seeing the film along with past podcast guest Daft, the three sit down and break down the film to their understanding. So yes, that means we will spoil this film, so go see it before you hear this podcast. They also talk about the Star Wars series in general, how people don’t know the origins of Good Burger, what it was like to see Star Wars now than the prequel films, fan theories to the latest Star Wars film, our thoughts on the Iron Man movies, Dustin thoughts on the upcoming Ghost in the Shell film, and much more.

(1:11:15 – 1:51:20 ) Yuletide Closing Remarks – All three hosts talk about what they did and got for Christmas, along with Daft experience with seeing the Hateful Eight, The last Hunger Games movie, how Right Stuf hooked us up, Bennett the Sage Bubblegum Crisis review rant, Dustin using Twitch, the Nickelodeon Slam Block, and much more.

AoY Podcast #80 – Ghost in the Shell 20th Anniversary Review (w/ Gerald Rathkolb)

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 1:43:27)

On November 18th, 1995, a certain anime film came out that changed the way we look at anime to this day. As anime fans, we owe it to a particular film for shaping how anime has been distributed and the limits on what it can become. We had to call in one of the big guns of anime podcasting, Gerald Rathkolb of the Anime World Order podcast, to discuss the impact that Ghost in the Shell left on the world since its release 20 years ago…

(0:00 – 16:40) Portrait of an Otaku – Gerald Rathkolb: Before we ever got into discussing Ghost in the Shell, we get to hear the backstory of how Gerald became an anime fan in the Virgin Islands. This brings is to know how much someone can hate windsurfing, what it took to own anime at your local Sam Goody, hating on Hanna-Barbera cartoons, how to FEEL THE ANIME POWER!, how the recorder isn’t a real instrument, and more.

(16:40 – 1:28:35) Review – Ghost in the Shell: Gerald takes us down memory lane going back 20 years at this point, where he explains how Ghost in the Shell affected the anime community at the time, and what brought in people to knowing anime. This of course gets us to talk about the Ghost in the Shell manga and other works by Masamune Shirow, and even say something about all the works of what came after Ghost in the Shell movie under the same name. We to spoil a bit of the film in terms of thematic elements of what Mamoru Oshii was putting into the film, which might actually make watching Ghost in the Shell much easier to watch and understand. Gerald pretty much stole the show, but both host just let Gerald tell his stories of high cyberpunk adventure. We also once again bring back the need for you listener to read Brian Ruh book. This of course gets off topic on the good ol’ days of anime being only sold at brick and mortar stores, discussing bloody Italian movies, how Digimon should be with the rest of the anime titles in your local video store, Mamoru Oshii as a director in general, Rumiko Takahashi is a HACK MANGA AUTHOR! THE TRUTH of Evangelion and Christianity, live action anime talk (here we go again…), Harmony Gold hate, Sci-Fi Channel anime censorship, and so much more…

(1:28:35 – 1:43:27) Closing Remarks: Gerald vents on how great Metal Gear Solid V is, which also led to Konami hate, how free to play games are terrible for you, Chris Chan and his transgender amiibos scam, Dustin getting a wisdom tooth pulled, and Dustin also calling out Gerald on his Giant Gorg review.

We should also note, Dustin was able to post up some Ghost in the Shell related things on the internet recently, where he posted the latest blog post at the Anime of Yesteryear Blog of the Animerica Ghost in the Shell issue, and also did a write up at his new blog The Cyber Funker mentioning briefly the impact of Ghost in the Shell. So check those links out!
