For our Halloween special, the AoY crew decides to give a proper send off to the late Takao Saito by reviewing the first adaptation of Golgo 13 to film back in 1973.
(0:00 – 46:35) Ken Takakura Shoots and Scores! Golgo 13 Review: We figured the best way to honor the late Saito is to review the earliest Golgo 13 manga to film adaptation back in 1973. This would be Jonn first time seeing this film, and Dustin’s second time. Dustin has even written an article online about this film during his days in college, which can be found here. It’s has also been nearly a decade and two podcast series ago since Dustin and Jonn talked about a Golgo 13 film in a podcast episode, so its good to dust off the old M-16 once again. This also contains the psyche of Golgo 13, firearms talk, Crying Freeman, James Bond and much more!

This time we have Dustin spending a few hours at Banzaicon, and Jonn spending the day at Comikaze.

Jonn talked about getting exhibitor passes from a local comic book shop, SJW tumblr hate speech, how Stan Lee promotes himself at his own con, the differences between comic vs. anime conventions, comic book vs. video game collecting, Jojo’s talk, partied out Ninja Turtles, the wrong directors for live action anime adaptations, anime to live action talk (mostly about Akira), Demon City Shinjuku, Harmony Gold hate, and much more.

On the eve of our 2 year anniversary (and the fact that it’s Christmas), Jonn and Zeonic decide to end the year by the wind rising beneath our wings. In this last episode of 2014, we get to soar one last time with Hayao Miyazaki last film, The Wind Rises.
(0:00 – 38:42) Review: The Wind Rises: There is no doubt about it that Hayao Miyazaki will go down as one of the most well known anime directors in the anime industry from the past 30 years. Because hey, without his contributions, we wouldn’t have any good anime to show our folks that doesn’t make all anime nerds look like degenerate social outcast. Despite the fact that Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are done for, they still had one last hurrah in them, and that’s this film. To Zeonic, he can easily say this is number 2 on his own personal “Best Miyazaki Films” list (which is behind Castle of Cagliostro, as Zeonic cleared up in the recording instead of letting Mononoke be his favorite, because that would be a dishonest travesty if that stayed the record in the podcast). You can expect this film to have funny moustached Italians, sketchy German engineers, falling in love, and making weapons of war in your lifetime. If you want a really interesting review, check out this ANNCast episode where Carl Horn chimes in on his knowledge of the actual Jiro Hirokoshi. Also in this segment, Zeonic and Jonn mention other works by Miyazaki, the current political disputes of Asia and Europe, some World War 2 truths, the Anime Abominations of Don East, and much more

Zeonic talks in detail about the ANNCast interview with Viz as to why Sailor Moon turned out the way it did, and the excuses behind it. This also gets Jonn and Zeonic to mention the new Dragonball Z film, as well as manga discussions (aka, really about Golgo 13 manga, because 35+ years of Duke Togo is hard to miss). So to keep up with putting out these late convention reports, Zeonic was able to report on his yearly trek to the convention land that is Animazement, that was about 3 months ago. There is really no side conversation in this one, well, minus a few things here and there as per usual.

After talking to Robert for a spell, Zeonic went on a spell as well regarding the issues of Animazement handling their “rules” in terms of autograph lines, more TRUTH on overestimating the Gundam fans in anime conventions when it comes to having line limits for autographs, going to the Gundam Rising panel late (you can see the part 1 and part 2 of the panel at those links), getting the sweetest hookup from Toshifumi Yoshida, Legend of Galactic Heroes talk, MORE TRUTH on anime fans at conventions who would rather torrent every damn thing than spend any money to helping the industry, finding obscurely rare anime books from the past, Zeonic idea to do an anime convention “reenactment,” and a ton more to say.

AoY Podcast #16 – The Toonami Filler Podcast (with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon)

Ok, so there is still no Gundam: The Origin podcast episode just yet, but its coming soon ( I guess???). But what me and my co-host Jonn decided to add in more podcast filler with… us discussing Toonami shows. We’ve been keeping up with Toonami since it started last year, which leads us to watch most of what comes on TV at night (mostly through DVR recordings/using the old VCR). The one show that we have been keeping up with from beginning to end was Tenchi Muyo GXP.
Tenchi Muyo GXP is not a great show by any means, but I will go out on a limb to say it was the one show that had both of our attention to watch from beginning to end. I wanted to watch it because I (secretly) wanted to watch Tenchi anything on TV again, because its been over a decade since I’ve had that enjoyment. This also leads to us talking about the Tenchi series in general.
After that, I talk about my first time playing Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (i.e, Micheal Biehn: The Video Game). This was my first introduction to the Far Cry series, and I gotta say, I was impressed.
But that’s not all! This episode was to originally end with those two things as our main topics, but since One Piece came back on TV for the first time in 5 years, we wanted to give our feedback on that also (especially for me being a first time viewer for the show). We also mention in this episode general anime talk, general Toonami talk, the failed Funimation One Piece livestream marathon, some audio issues, some video game talk, and much more.
