It sure seems that were on some kinda Gundam bandwagon, with us talking about Gundam the Origin manga in the last episode, and now the recent release of the Origin anime. We figured now is the time to hit the bullseye with our bulky grey pre-One Year War Guntank before it grinds to a halt and we don’t care as much. So, let’s dive into Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I “Blue Eyed Casval.”
(0:00 – 52:00) Review: Mobile Suit Gundam – The Origin I “Blue Eyed Casval”: It seems that when anime gets adapted from a manga source, people seem to be up in arms about the final outcome, which is usually for the worse. However, Jonn and Zeonic believe this is a pretty good adaptation in terms that Jonn has read Vol. 5 of the manga and Zeonic has not. So to Zeonic, this is all fresh to him, where as Jonn sees it as pretty accurate and better structured than in the manga. We of course start things off with the current decay of Radioshack, which then leads us to rant about current anime fans taste in anime, what is considered really “filler” in anime, diving into the “pre” Gundam universe, and how one should watch the Gundam series with Origin now being animated. Also, Colony Drop put out their initial reaction of this OVA, and it seems their viewpoint is a bit different than ours, or try a lot.
(52:00 – 1:32:21) Closing Remarks (a.k.a. more Chris Chan talk): Jonn and Zeonic spend a good amount of time closing things out with Zeonic trip to a comic book store in Athens G.A., the card game Superfight!, Marvel movie rights, R.I.P Leonard Nimoy and R.I.P USS Ranger (aka, the aircraft carrier in Top Gun and Star Trek IV), and of course breaking down the audio recording of a past love by our favorite lolcow. All this and more in this episode…

Ok, so it’s been a exactly 25 episodes since we last covered the Gundam the Origin manga. However, we’re at least was honest in that post about if it’ll take longer than 18 episodes to get to the next volume, which we clearly went above and beyond that number. However, Jonn and Zeonic are gonna double dose it for you, by covering TWO volumes of Gundam the Origin in this episode too make up some lost ground. We are also gonna keep up with tradition from last year, and that’s to read out a years worth of comments we have received in 2014 (and some of 2015 as well).
(0:00 – 50:00) Review: Mobile Suit Gundam – The Origin Vol. 3 & 4: After playing our Indiegogo intro at the beginning of the podcast, both Jonn and Zeonic tackle the South American Zeon occupied jungle of Gundam the Origin. Both co-host are able to go through both volumes by hitting the high points of the plot, but it’s all the same if someone saw the original Gundam series to begin with, so die hard fans are not gonna get offended by the spoilers we might say. Of course, this is Yasuhiko way of making sure the White Base crew knew where South America was than trying to trek through Asia to get there like in the original series. Of course before we dive into any of that, Zeonic explains to Jonn how he was still alive by battling a harsh cold, getting on tangents about television censorship in cartoons, and then us talking about Futurama seasons for some reason.
(50:00 – 52:27) Promo’s: Alpha Counter is there to remind us the dangers of today’s post-modern way of accepting Furries and how, that idea is just plain dumb. Anime World Order has been busy with putting out 2 episodes within a months time, which includes interviews with current Hobby Link Japan employee and one of the early founders of American anime fandom Ardith Carlton, as well as talking about SeHa Girls with Heidi Kemps. Dave and Joel still wanna let you know, that Jojo’s is a crazy show to watch.
(52:27 – 2:07:33) Keeping with Tradition – Reading Listener Comments: This is a tradition that we’ll continue to do on the podcast, because it’s our small appreciation to you listeners that we do read your comments, and then later read them out loud on this podcast once a year. Upon reading out our comments in 2014, we get into discussions about Gundam, Macross (and the blunders at Harmony Gold), Captain Harlock, video games and a whole lot more. This of course keeps us up with the latest Chris Chan news, Discotek Media doing their own crowdsource idea, and much more.

Man, how time does fly, and the same goes for the previous 59 podcast episodes we’ve done since day one. So to celebrate this occasion, it really isn’t anything too spectacular. This is a two and a half hour “unwind” session with Jonn and Zeonic for this years celebration, which range from school, medical talks, movies, video games, and all of the above. We want too thank our listeners for their comments and feedback (as well as some spare change on the side), and we don’t plan on going anywhere for the next two years. So, here is what we got in store…
(0:00 – 1:20:31) 2nd Anniversary Special Part 1: The first 30 minutes or so were recorded the the night before the rest of the recording came in, and we would have kept it going hadn’t Jonn internet went out. In the first part, we discussed topics like the ongoing debate over “what is art?,” followed by a leaked account of how much money Chris Chan spends on WiiU games, Jonn medical background and why he was out of commission for a while. After the transition, we then talk about what we got for Christmas, which included talk about Gundam the Origin, Nintendo WiiU and Smash Bros. talk, Zeonic experience in watching Nadesico with his girlfriend, and learning Spanish in high school.
(1:20:31 – 1:23:02) Podcast Promo’s: We seem to be contracted to keep playing promo’s for Alpha Counter, which with us having Sean Ryan on the last episode with us, we call that a winning investment. You can also check out Mating Habits of the Modern Geek podcast, were nerds everywhere can learn the secrets of getting their desired significant other… which might involve changing oneself to do so. We went ahead and put up a promo for Fast Karate, since Jojo’s has started back up, they will continue the legacy of dissecting to the core of what Jojo’s really is.
(1:23:02 – 2:35:16) 2nd Anniversary Special Part 2: Here is were we get to talk about movies that have recently been to theaters, such as the last Hobbit film, Hunger Games Mocking Jay Pt 1, The Interview and that last Sin City movie. Of course most of our discussion will be in talking about the upcoming movies for this year based off the trailers we have seen. This includes Star Wars Episode 7, Jurassic World, Avengers 2/Marvel movies in general, and that new Terminator Genysis movie. Of course we can’t help but to get into off topic territory with us discussing the Star Wars universe in general, the James and Mike play of the Shadows of the Empire N64 game, pissing on Rob Leifeld art, and much more.
Music Selection:
OP – The perfect song about your woman and hobbits…
ED – Jefferson Starship come to save the Star Wars special…

This review was a long time coming, even before Jonn and Zeonic started this podcast. This is also the first movie review of the year, which does tie into an anime by the same name, so were not that off our beat guys!! Of course the gang can’t do this film review alone, and had to reach out to Sean Ryan from the Alpha Counter podcast to form our own beatbox gang as we journeyed our way through the L.A. ghetto with the 1991 film, The Guyver.
(0:00 – 52:25) Animoovie Review: The Guyver: This film comes from a time in the 1990’s when film companies got licenses (or didn’t more than likely) to anime titles in order to adapt them into live action format with the shoe-string budgets they had to work with. The results varied (mostly poor), but this film seemed to be that first pioneer from manga to the film reel in America. With Zeonic, Jonn and Sean forming our hip hop gang, we trek through the film encountering rapping monsters, corrupt CEO’s, making things work by bashing your head onto them, taking 8 hours to get lunch, how NOT to fight, and Luke Skywalker working for the G Man. We do our best to stay on topic, but run into trouble when it comes to certain off topic agendas.
(52:25 – 1:06:42) Closing Remarks: There was nothing short about wrapping up our podcast, not when we discuss the latest news about Chris Chan Guerrilla War against Sega, Sean trip to Orlando, and Zeonic calling out Regan.
(1:06:42 – 1:15:41) Bonus Material: This was even more off-topic stuff that Zeonic just left at the end for a stinger, which included people who can’t use headphones, and finding out what films Paul Chapman has reviewed. All this and more in this weeks episode.

AoY Podcast #56 – Takahashi vs. Tomino Round 3 (Combat Mecha Xabungle & Gasaraki Review)

After a 15 month absence, Zeonic and Jonn decide to bring back the anime directing champs of their heydays and put them and their shows back into the podcast cagematch for yet another bout. Our last featured bout was showcased back in Podcast #24, were we had Tomino’s Ideon pitted against Takahashi SPT Layzner. This time, we bring out the political western big guns for another match of Takahashi vs Tomino Round 3. This time we got Combat Mecha Xabungle against Gasaraki.
(0:00 – 50:42) Review: Combat Mecha Xabungle: This was a recording done back in early November, where Zeonic FINALLY got around to watching the Xabungle Graffiti compilation movie. And like the usual fare, Zeonic watches a bad compilation of something, while Jonn (being the one who watched the whole show) has to sit Zeonic down and tell him where the compilation made its mistakes in telling the story, which was a lot of areas. Of course even with Zeonic watching a raw compilation movie, he still enjoyed all the zaney moments that made it mostly entertaining, such as how the anime doesn’t give a damn about animoo physics, wild west amnesty laws, anime staffers who didn’t do their jobs in coloring, little girls who explain the plot for you, and Megas XLR way before Megas XLR. We should note, as usual, Jonn and Zeonic start the podcast off by not diving into Xabungle, but talking about the ending of the Naruto manga and those who marathon them on ANN, which leads to the end about Chris chan and “Shovel Mechs,” Miyazaki films, and much more.
(50:42 – 54:06) Promos: Since we realized that promo’s for other podcast haven’t been featured in a while, we decide to inform you about other podcast you probably should already know about. Anime World Order recently released their 2nd review of the Shinji Aramaki Captain Harlock movie (which we covered back in #51). Fast Karate for the Gentleman did one recently about them still watching Jojo’s, because they are the only two men alive that this show is made for. Jeff from the Daily Anime Podcast decided to release two episodes in one day, which were about Legend of Galactic Heroes and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. And lastly we got Alpha Counter, who seems to be covering a lot about #GamerGate, because they are the right people for the job without them sounding like extremists on either camps of that following.
(54:06 – 1:50:16): Review: Gasaraki: This part of the recording was recorded back in September, meaning this has been in Zeonic external HD backlog for a while until Xabungle got reviewed. But to Zeonic viewpoint, much like the show, the recording should have taken a long slumber and never have been disturbed. Zeonic even wonders if Gasaraki might be the next big anime sleep aid to anime insomniacs out there, much like how Odin: Photon Space Sailor Starlight has been the cure for otaku insomnia for years now (but were still waiting on the hard facts to back up that claim). This show is full of people being locked up in rooms, clone facilities in the middle of nowhere, wandering in the backwoods of Japan, NERV somehow existing, street wars in South Central Akihabara, pimping out your Koga mech, and unneeded food sanctions. This prompts Zeonic and Jonn to mention political issues at the turn of the century like Kosovo, Jonn mention of Wag the Dog, middle eastern history, and how Gasaraki must be a parallel universe to our own?
(1:50:16 – 2:25:45) Unnecessarily “Longer-Than-Usual” Closing Remarks: This might be, on record, the longest time we have spent on closing remarks. This of course came with an agenda, which was Zeonic doing something for Alpha Counter, which may have been a bad decision? Regardless, the real meat of this discussion is the Alpha Counter vs DAPDX Indiegogo Campaigns, general issues with crowdsourcing, mentioning the disasters of DashCon and MineOrama, knowing a bit about our past, Dasuki and Discotek talk, and much much more.
As an extra bonus, click the text for the giant pastebin of Jonn and Zeonic conversations over AIM while they were watching Gasaraki.
