Even though (Pat) Labor day weekend was earlier this month, we made sure to celebrate it the right way here on this podcast. We decided to bring in our other Indiegogo contributor Cody Billings to cover the highlight film of the Patlabor series, Patlabor 2: The Movie.

(0:00 – 49:45) Indiegogo Perk Review – Patlabor 2: The Movie – This was recommended to us by Cody, which couldn’t have happened at a better time during the year. Patlabor 2, depending on how much you like Patlabor, is considered by the few die-hard Patlabor fans out there as one of the best in the series. To even go as far to give its director Mamoru Oshii credit, this might be one of his finest anime movies. You can also listen in on our old review a couple of years back about Patlabor: The Movie from our days at the CyberNauts Cast. Patlabor 2 is able to tackle the social and political troubles of Japan during the early 1990’s by cleverly packaging them into this movie story and plot. Zeonic has used this film as a reference in more than one school project, which he used Brian Ruh book, Stray Dog of Anime: The Films of Mamoru Oshii, in his Contemporary Art class last spring in order to dive into Oshii complex narratives in his films to fully understand what the director is trying to say. This gets us into discussing more of Oshii works, the UNTAC, Khmer Rogue and 2-26 incidents, works of Peter Marinker, Oshii use of biblical scripture, and more.

(49:45 – 1:17:53) Closing Remarks – We all seem to have closing remarks in this segment, even our mascot has something to say. Jonn mentions the latest with Love_That_Goku, Chris(tine) Chan goes to OmegaCon, Zeonic discusses Metal Gear Solid 5, Cwcki bashes an old school project of Zeonic, Cody mentions him coming Straight Outta Compton, more hot air about our backstory episode (and maybe a secret code involved?), the TRUTH behind the Artist of Yaoi Podcast, Cody getting the best edition of Naruto, and much more!!

Music Selection:

OP – Let’s roll out once more SV2…

ED – Chris…. you can’t…. just stop…

Get ready to stare into your alien scouters in order too resurrect an old enemy, because this time Dustin and Jonn review the ULTIMATE REZUREKT’N of Dragonball Z: Resurrection of F!

(0:00 – 48:49) Blockbuster Anime Review – Dragonball Z: Resurrection of F: As of this recording, this latest Dragonball Z movie is ranked 9th according to this list of top grossing anime movies of all time. Both hosts were able to see the films and have some good remakrs to say about it. Despite Toei being the cheapest anime company out there (more so than CPM’s legacy), they’re able to continue drawing in more of the western audience into theaters to see a Japanese cartoon for being the most well known Japanese cartoon to ever exist. Other than some spoilers to recap the movie, Jonn has to explain to Dustin the entire complexity of DBZ canon vs. non-canon to him. This of course brings us to talking about One Piece and the real TRUTH behind the Garlic Jr. Saga… well not really.

(48:49 – 1:30:28) The Republican National Closing Remarks Debate: For some unknown reason, Jonn and Dustin sit down and dissect the big Republican Debate back in August, and really just talk about the great mystery on how number one real estate NYC gangsta Donald Trump is ahead of every politician ever. Dustin also says RIP to a notable anime fan of his day, Robert W. Gibson, which you can check out his convention stories over at Hokuto no Fogie, and last year’s interviews with Tim Eldred and Anime World Order, to see what it really was like to be an early anime fan. Also stay tuned for the “zinger” after the song for Daft’s great plan to open up a “board game bar,” and how geek bars might be bad idea’s all around. All this and much more in this weeks episode…

Music Selection:

OP – Everyone try and be like Goku these days…

ED – Why anime should be created by metal bands…

AoY Podcast #73 – Taking on Indiegogo Perks #1 (The Legend of Black Heaven Review)

Hey, remember when we used to do anime reviews? Yea, the gang vaguely remembers doing them also. But hey, were back on the anime beat, and this time we start to cover those Indiegogo perks we promised at the early part of the year. This time we got a request from Sean Ryan from the Alpha Counter podcast to issue us the most rockin anime out there, The Legend of Black Heaven.

Again, we don’t need no time codes for this episode, since it was Zeonic and Sean sitting in the middle of a back ally hallway of the Marriott late Saturday night during Animazement. This is also where frequent con goers and hotel staff kept coming by us during the recording, which was near the most desired restroom in the entire hotel mind you, so you’ll hear zingers of that at the end of the episode. The Legend of Black Heaven is an anime Zeonic has always heard good things about over the years, and finally had the chance to watch and thoroughly enjoy this OVA. Even though Black Heaven is more relatable to people reaching their Logan’s Run age expiration date and beyond, anyone can pick up this title and enjoy it, wither you are musically inclined or not. This would also be this podcast second review of anime based off music, since our first one was about To-Y 2 years ago. Of course, you can expect some “sidebar” discussions about anime Terry Crews, talking about music in general, how american football is really “handegg,” Masters of the Universe movie synopsis, and Zeonic gets the hiccups. All this and much more in this this weeks episode…

Music Selection:

OP – Get ready to go backstage with Zeonic and Sean

ED – The moral of this anime is, don’t start a band…

This show has:

Dunno why Zeonic first thought of anime Terry Crews was in Friday After Next, but that is how his pimp mind works sometimes…

And you wonder why the Japanese have a hard time understanding Americans…

In general, AMV’s are the worst way to promote a show to make someone think it’s going to be great. However, this AMV is an exception, just go see Black Heaven already.

Per request by Sean Ryan…

AoY Podcast #72 – AnimEigo Panel Bonus Track

Also known as: “Hanzo the Razor… THE 3D EDITION!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 58:28)

You can go ahead and consider this episode as a “bonus track” to the Animazement review in the previous episode. This was an audio recording done at the AnimEigo panel for Animazement 2015 that for people who couldn’t be there, are able to hear what was said and discussed for the most part, thanks to Zeonic inability to handle recording it on his phone in a better way.

There isn’t really a need to for a time code in this episode, as the entire thing is the panel itself. Zeonic came in a few minutes late to one question, and had some issues 5 minutes in the panel, which caused some other things not to get on the audio. But for the most part, you should be able to hear what Robert Woodhead has to say and does his best to answer questions. Zeonic himself and Anime Hell’s own Phil Lee ask the hard hitting questions to Robert, meaning the’re the questions you can hear the clearest, just FYI. The other questions involved the mention of Hanzo the Razor, the Otaku no Video Kickstarter project, public enemy own ani-twitter Hazukari asking about Boah, the mention of Minna Agechou, Wizardry, AnimEigo as a company throughout the years, and others asking about the past titles of AnimEigo being possible Kickstarter’s one day. This and a whole lot more were asked in the panel, so check that out! Also, we swear we will release an anime review next episode, you can count on that!

Music Selection:

ED – I didn’t bother doing an OP this time so deal with it folks!!!

This show has:

I wholeheartedly stand by the SIDE KICK WAAAAAAAAAVE attack! (at 5:10)

Bear witness the greatness that is Hanzo the Razor!

AoY Podcast #67: I Love The 80’s Edition (Kung Fury & Mad Max: Fury Road Review)

Within a months time, both the big screen and the small tablet screens have been hit with a wave of 80’s style films. If you can’t tell from the title, there is no anime in this episode, but damn, these titles might as well be. We test drive our Testarossa flux capacitor once more and decide to hit up 1985 with Kung Fury and Mad Max: Fury Road.

(0:00 – 29:48) Live-Action OVA Review – Kung Fury: This was a film that wanted to replicate the mindset, feel, and era of 1985 Miami, Florida. Maybe it didn’t hit all the right keytar notes, but it has heart for sure. Kung Fury feels more like a fun little OVA than a film, but it does have many things going for it from tracking issues, Nazi arcade robots, and even laser raptors. This segment also gets Zeonic and Jonn talking about Jurassic Park/World talk, people’s opinions over Twitch on this film and much more.

(29:48 – 32:31) Podcast Promo’s: Since we reference both Alpha Counter and Mating Habits of the Modern Geek in our next review, they both had something to say about the new Mad Max film. Also, Jeff from Daily Anime Podcast is back to do more episode summaries of Legend of Galactic Heroes talk, and there is even a twitter group watch about it that started up recently, so give it a listen.

(32:31 – 1:30:15) Movie Review – Mad Max: Fury Road: It’s amazing to believe that the last Mad Max film is 30 years old at this point, and even with all three of those movies combined, they can still hold up today. Fury Road is the absolute equation of what Mad Max is and should be about, and if it took 30 years to get to this point, it was worth the wait. This film also gets the anti-SJW gears turning in Jonn and Zeonic when they mention the differing opinions of online people, American social issues, Aqua Teen Hunger Force talk, discuss the Mad Max films in more depth, the change of Bruce Jenner and Chris Chan feminism rantings. All this and a whole lot more in this week episode.

Music Selection:

OP1 – Get ready to enter 1985… Kung Fury STYLE!!!

ED1 – It takes a True Survivor to make it in our next review…

OP2 – Guitar Green Energy is the way to go in the Mad Max future…

ED2 – Were lucky to be one of the living…
