On the eve of our 2 year anniversary (and the fact that it’s Christmas), Jonn and Zeonic decide to end the year by the wind rising beneath our wings. In this last episode of 2014, we get to soar one last time with Hayao Miyazaki last film, The Wind Rises.

(0:00 – 38:42) Review: The Wind Rises: There is no doubt about it that Hayao Miyazaki will go down as one of the most well known anime directors in the anime industry from the past 30 years. Because hey, without his contributions, we wouldn’t have any good anime to show our folks that doesn’t make all anime nerds look like degenerate social outcast. Despite the fact that Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are done for, they still had one last hurrah in them, and that’s this film. To Zeonic, he can easily say this is number 2 on his own personal “Best Miyazaki Films” list (which is behind Castle of Cagliostro, as Zeonic cleared up in the recording instead of letting Mononoke be his favorite, because that would be a dishonest travesty if that stayed the record in the podcast). You can expect this film to have funny moustached Italians, sketchy German engineers, falling in love, and making weapons of war in your lifetime. If you want a really interesting review, check out this ANNCast episode where Carl Horn chimes in on his knowledge of the actual Jiro Hirokoshi. Also in this segment, Zeonic and Jonn mention other works by Miyazaki, the current political disputes of Asia and Europe, some World War 2 truths, the Anime Abominations of Don East, and much more

(38:42 – 59:07) UNSOLVED MYSTERIES: VIZ MEDIA Segment: Both Jonn and Zeonic get into a discussion over the hot button issue (as of November) regarding the release of Sailor Moon by Viz Media. Zeonic talks in detail about the ANNCast interview with Viz as to why Sailor Moon turned out the way it did, and the excuses behind it. This also gets Jonn and Zeonic to mention the new Dragonball Z film, as well as manga discussions (aka, really about Golgo 13 manga, because 35+ years of Duke Togo is hard to miss). All this and more in the last episode of 2014. Merry Christmas to all our listeners!!!!

AoY Podcast #56 – Takahashi vs. Tomino Round 3 (Combat Mecha Xabungle & Gasaraki Review)

After a 15 month absence, Zeonic and Jonn decide to bring back the anime directing champs of their heydays and put them and their shows back into the podcast cagematch for yet another bout. Our last featured bout was showcased back in Podcast #24, were we had Tomino’s Ideon pitted against Takahashi SPT Layzner. This time, we bring out the political western big guns for another match of Takahashi vs Tomino Round 3. This time we got Combat Mecha Xabungle against Gasaraki.

(0:00 – 50:42) Review: Combat Mecha Xabungle: This was a recording done back in early November, where Zeonic FINALLY got around to watching the Xabungle Graffiti compilation movie. And like the usual fare, Zeonic watches a bad compilation of something, while Jonn (being the one who watched the whole show) has to sit Zeonic down and tell him where the compilation made its mistakes in telling the story, which was a lot of areas. Of course even with Zeonic watching a raw compilation movie, he still enjoyed all the zaney moments that made it mostly entertaining, such as how the anime doesn’t give a damn about animoo physics, wild west amnesty laws, anime staffers who didn’t do their jobs in coloring, little girls who explain the plot for you, and Megas XLR way before Megas XLR. We should note, as usual, Jonn and Zeonic start the podcast off by not diving into Xabungle, but talking about the ending of the Naruto manga and those who marathon them on ANN, which leads to the end about Chris chan and “Shovel Mechs,” Miyazaki films, and much more.

(50:42 – 54:06) Promos: Since we realized that promo’s for other podcast haven’t been featured in a while, we decide to inform you about other podcast you probably should already know about. Anime World Order recently released their 2nd review of the Shinji Aramaki Captain Harlock movie (which we covered back in #51). Fast Karate for the Gentleman did one recently about them still watching Jojo’s, because they are the only two men alive that this show is made for. Jeff from the Daily Anime Podcast decided to release two episodes in one day, which were about Legend of Galactic Heroes and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. And lastly we got Alpha Counter, who seems to be covering a lot about #GamerGate, because they are the right people for the job without them sounding like extremists on either camps of that following.

(54:06 – 1:50:16): Review: Gasaraki: This part of the recording was recorded back in September, meaning this has been in Zeonic external HD backlog for a while until Xabungle got reviewed. But to Zeonic viewpoint, much like the show, the recording should have taken a long slumber and never have been disturbed. Zeonic even wonders if Gasaraki might be the next big anime sleep aid to anime insomniacs out there, much like how Odin: Photon Space Sailor Starlight has been the cure for otaku insomnia for years now (but were still waiting on the hard facts to back up that claim). This show is full of people being locked up in rooms, clone facilities in the middle of nowhere, wandering in the backwoods of Japan, NERV somehow existing, street wars in South Central Akihabara, pimping out your Koga mech, and unneeded food sanctions. This prompts Zeonic and Jonn to mention political issues at the turn of the century like Kosovo, Jonn mention of Wag the Dog, middle eastern history, and how Gasaraki must be a parallel universe to our own?

(1:50:16 – 2:25:45) Unnecessarily “Longer-Than-Usual” Closing Remarks: This might be, on record, the longest time we have spent on closing remarks. This of course came with an agenda, which was Zeonic doing something for Alpha Counter, which may have been a bad decision? Regardless, the real meat of this discussion is the Alpha Counter vs DAPDX Indiegogo Campaigns, general issues with crowdsourcing, mentioning the disasters of DashCon and MineOrama, knowing a bit about our past, Dasuki and Discotek talk, and much much more.

As an extra bonus, click the text for the giant pastebin of Jonn and Zeonic conversations over AIM while they were watching Gasaraki.

AoY Podcast #55 – BanzaiCon III (2014) Con Report

So this episode might be the only thing released in November, but oh well, since thats how it goes when papers are due and test are being studied for. At least this time for Zeonic sake, a con report isn’t released 3 months after the con ended, but only by a month!! We totally know what were doing, as Zeonic gets to dive into his adventures about BanzaiCon 2014!

(0:00 – 1:06:41) Con Report: BanzaiCon III (2014): This is the first time Zeonic has stayed for a South Carolina con for more than a day, and he has some good ventures out of his experience. This is all entailed about getting locked out of your car, cats that break computer equipment, broken air conditioning systems, watching SEC college football, getting rid of junk, people who leave shoes in con rooms, meeting cool Trekkies, and outdoing other people’s panels (at least in Zeonic mind). Of course for no logical reason, Jonn and Zeonic spiral off topic throughout the podcast about RightStuf getting Gundam, the gradual death of American Cartoons, a GIGANTIC discussion about Science Fiction films/books/etc, Ultraman talk and much more.

(1:06:41 – 1:18:20) Bonus Content: Here is the part of the podcast where Zeonic recorded the conversations from the older con attendees at BanzaiCon, where they relish in telling tales about debating the writings by Richard Matheson, Science Fiction movies, and drinking all in good fun. About half way through that the audio will fade out and in to indicate the break of when the group went out to smoke and then came back at the table. So enjoy the bonus!!

AoY Podcast #51 – Space Pirate Captain Harlock (2013) Review

So, you could say it’s been about mid-July since the last time we did a review of some kind, and you would be totally right about that. Well, thanks to the power of selecting anime off Netflix, Jonn and Zeonic were able to find the treasure trove of freedom in the recent works by Shinji Aramaki. So, Jonn and Zeonic take our oaths to the Arcadia and TAKE TO THE SKYYYY with the 2013 Space Pirate Captain Harlock movie.

(0:00 – 33:55) Review: Space Pirate Captain Harlock (2013): When it comes to knowing the world of Captian Harlock, Zeonic and Jonn have only really seen Arcadia of my Youth (aka SECOND TOO THE GREATNESS OF VENGEANCE OF THE SPACE PIRATE!!), and Zeonic saw some of Harlock Saga he rented back from Blockbuster in the early 2000’s during his high school anime renting days. So, we really don’t know a whole lot about the world of Harlock compared to people like Corn Pone Flicks, Dave Merrill, and a bunch of other Harlock fans stretched across the interstellar maps of the internet (I should note, Dave Merrill and CPF are one in the same entity BTW.) So Zeonic and Jonn decided to give this recent movie by the fantastic mecha designer/ not so fantastic director Shinji Aramaki.  Aside from phallic weapons IINNNN SPAAACE, poor politics and trying to reverse time; we SPOIL a lot about this film, for good reason. This of course has us talking about Aramaki as a director in general, and maybe a strong accusation on how he makes every movie ever.

(33:55 – 55:56) Social “In”justice Warriorz Segment: Jonn and Zeonic decided after blabbering on about Harlock for far too long, they get into some current issues (as of August 2014) with the riots in Ferguson MI, RIP to Robin Williams (really just a mention there), the trial details of OJ Simpson, general anime talk, The Eltingville Club comic, phone company problems, and much more.

AoY Podcast #45 – Big in Japan Special (aka Zeonic goes to Japan)

Kanazawa Otaku Bar

Also known as: “His name is Dustin. Duh-Duhskin?”
And also: “”Oh man, I need to get drunk bad!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 2:22:52)

If there is one thing that anime fans would ever agree upon as a community, it’s that every person who likes anime wants to go to Japan once in their lives. It is a second desire that tags along with liking Japanese cartoons, and fans will do just about anything to see the land of the rising sun when given that golden opportunity to go. That moment was able to finally come to Zeonic, when he went on a university trip to Kanazawa, Japan to finally accomplish that life goal of being an anime fan for 15+ years.

(0:00 – 1:26:03) –  Zeonic tells his journey over the pacific to the land of the rising sun, which is full of airline stupidity, stopping in Jonn’s backyard, getting In n Out of LAX layovers, and people who steal his pillow somewhere over the pacific. Of course upon arriving in the land of otaku milk and honey, he mentions how he does English Q&A on a high school play, what his experience was like teaching English to the Japanese, talking about anime translation differences between east and west with other people, and getting on the Japanese evening news.

Promo Break (1:26:03 – 1:28:15) – Since this is a pretty long episode, I got 3 podcast promos for you to listen too. I decided to get things off with the anime podcasting champions of the Anime World Order podcast, followed by the only great anime promo I have ever heard of from The Daily Anime Podcast, and then giving a shout out to our bro’s over at Alpha Counter. In other words, these guys are better than us even on our best days, so check em out.

(1:28:15 – 2:22:52) – After the promo break, Zeonic tells his personal experience with getting involved in the ultimate bonding experience with the Japanese society; by going to a local bathhouse. This also leads too seeing a typical bingo night, talking about the sights and shops around Kanazawa, the city local festival, and even more flight issues coming back home. We also happen to divert off the podcast flight plan to mention that Violence Jack is licensed by Discotek Media, what North Korea podcasts would be like, which leads to a nose dive into talking about terrible Korean anime (and the poor suckers who review it.) All this and a whole lot more to be stored in your overhead podcast compartment.
