Every year in California, the Electronic Entertainment Expo becomes that milestone that video game fans look forward too to indicate that summer finally begins. This year was the year that dreams did come true to many fans across the globe, even dreams that us podcast hosts have been waiting for many years.

We really don’t need a time code for this episode, since we stay true to staying on topic on what happened at E3 this year. June 16th, 2015 will mark a milestone date for both Jonn and Zeonic as the day Shenmue 3 was announced that launched a hugely successful Kickstarter that even crashed Kickstarter themselves. This also gets us into talking about dreams coming true for Kingdom Hearts 3, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, The Last Guardian, and much more. If you can’t tell already, (but let’s break it down for you again), that this podcast totally called out the idea of Shenmue coming to Kickstarter when we were talking with Lisle Wilkerson last year, so we are total trend setters of the gaming industry without anyone really knowing it.

This also gets us into discussing what happened during the other conferences (and how the HoloLens is just Strange Days tech come to life), the breakdown of the Nintendo World Championship 2015, Conkers Bad Fur Day talk, latest with Chris Chan and much more. Also, Josh gives his big plug for his personal blog at Cartoon Historian, where he spends a lot of time researching and writing about early American television animation that is largely forgotten about, and why you should care. He is basically becoming the next generation of Fred Patton without even knowing it.

Music Selection:

OP – When Shenmue comes your way, you dream on!!!

ED – These Shenmue dreams go on as I close my eyes…

That was how I felt in that moment too…

So for anyone wanting to know what this game is about, let these drunken Irish developers tell you all about it…

Big question, does this game still hold up almost 2 decades later?

AoY Podcast #67: I Love The 80’s Edition (Kung Fury & Mad Max: Fury Road Review)

Within a months time, both the big screen and the small tablet screens have been hit with a wave of 80’s style films. If you can’t tell from the title, there is no anime in this episode, but damn, these titles might as well be. We test drive our Testarossa flux capacitor once more and decide to hit up 1985 with Kung Fury and Mad Max: Fury Road.

(0:00 – 29:48) Live-Action OVA Review – Kung Fury: This was a film that wanted to replicate the mindset, feel, and era of 1985 Miami, Florida. Maybe it didn’t hit all the right keytar notes, but it has heart for sure. Kung Fury feels more like a fun little OVA than a film, but it does have many things going for it from tracking issues, Nazi arcade robots, and even laser raptors. This segment also gets Zeonic and Jonn talking about Jurassic Park/World talk, people’s opinions over Twitch on this film and much more.

(29:48 – 32:31) Podcast Promo’s: Since we reference both Alpha Counter and Mating Habits of the Modern Geek in our next review, they both had something to say about the new Mad Max film. Also, Jeff from Daily Anime Podcast is back to do more episode summaries of Legend of Galactic Heroes talk, and there is even a twitter group watch about it that started up recently, so give it a listen.

(32:31 – 1:30:15) Movie Review – Mad Max: Fury Road: It’s amazing to believe that the last Mad Max film is 30 years old at this point, and even with all three of those movies combined, they can still hold up today. Fury Road is the absolute equation of what Mad Max is and should be about, and if it took 30 years to get to this point, it was worth the wait. This film also gets the anti-SJW gears turning in Jonn and Zeonic when they mention the differing opinions of online people, American social issues, Aqua Teen Hunger Force talk, discuss the Mad Max films in more depth, the change of Bruce Jenner and Chris Chan feminism rantings. All this and a whole lot more in this week episode.

Music Selection:

OP1 – Get ready to enter 1985… Kung Fury STYLE!!!

ED1 – It takes a True Survivor to make it in our next review…

OP2 – Guitar Green Energy is the way to go in the Mad Max future…

ED2 – Were lucky to be one of the living…

This show has:

Don’t be hassling the Hoff now…

Yep, this was pretty much that scene in Mad Max…

Adios, Hunger Force of Aqua Teens…

Here we continue more of our discussion of the spring anime season, where Zeonic is absent from this recording as he’s gradually recovering from his crazy weekend at Animazement. However Jonn, Josh and Daft take the reigns to discuss more about not only the anime in the spring, but also from previous anime seasons still going on.

(0:00 – 35:15) Series from previous Anime Seasons Review: The gang talks about shows from both the Fall and Winter anime seasons, both new and continuing with Assassination Classroom, Comical Psychosomatic Medicine, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying, The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan, Nisekoi, and My Teen Romance Comedy Snafu Too. They also discuss sites dedicated to finding everything wrong with professional subtitles, opinions on Haruhi Suzumiya, and much more.

(35:15 – 1:43:02) Spring Anime 2015 List Review: Here is where we review every other anime but Rinne, because that was already covered in our last episode. So for the full list we have Arslan Senki (The Heroic Legend of Arslan TV), Ultimate Otaku Teacher, Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon?, Gunslinger Stratos: The Animation, Sound Euphonium, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Ninja Slayer: The Animation, My Love Story!!, Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign, Plastic Memories, Punch Line, Food Wars and Show by Rock!! This also gets the gang into discussion the latest on Chris Chan court dates and how he went to a club, people on Twitter, how Charlie Hebdo was an inside job, general conspiracy theory talk, and much more.

(1:43:02 – 1:59:16) Podcast Zinger: This was pre-review stuff that happened before anyone really started to review anything. This involved discussing Penguins Memory and a past reviewers obsession over it, talking about stuff Josh hasn’t seen, how Daft is too lazy to edit podcasts and doesn’t understand how they work, and much more. (aka, Daft, it does NOT take an hour for me to edit any episode I ever do – Zeonic)

Music Selection:

OP – Let’s assassinate this Spring Anime…

It is the day after the resurrection of the son of God for people of the Christian faith. We celebrate this time by either going to a church for the first time since Christmas, getting the day off of school or work for Good Friday, and maybe getting some bible reading thrown in for good measure. However, Zeonic and Jonn decided to keep up with tradition (starting from last year) to watch an anime with Christianity being highly misinterpreted. We look no further than the masterpiece OVA, Crystal Triangle.

(0:00 – 15:10) PreReview Discussion: This is just a way for Jonn and Zeonic to ramble on about things to empty ones mind for the Crystal Triangle holy message to be bestowed upon them. This includes Zeonic ramblings about his computer issues, while Jonn brings up the Social Justice issues about whats going down in Indiana. To be honest, it’s the hosts way of saying “Man, do we ‘really’ have to review Crystal Triangle? Ugh… let’s get this over with…”

(15:10 – 55:12) Review: Crystal Triangle OVA: It’s been a good while since we talked about older anime, so it’s high time we got back into the swing of things. Crystal Triangle seems to be “that” anime that people know about too be “that” anime. Zeonic see’s it as his 2nd worst anime of all time, while Jonn ranks it below his Pilot Candidate “low-end-yard-stick-of-crap.” It’s amazing that at one point, this anime sold on laserdisc for 120 bucks, which in today’s anime world, would anyone in their right mind spend that much for it (other than Mike Toole perhaps?). Perhaps it’s the “engrish” and “lussian” dialect in this anime that’s confused the TRUTH of God’s Message to be fully interpreted for us, which is why we couldn’t take this movie too seriously. We also mention the TRUTHful location of where the bible might be held, forums that don’t like Evangelion, Urashiman on The Anime Network, and Samurai Pizza Cats talk.

(55:12 – 1:19:39) Closing Remarks: This is the part where we look towards our “Podcast Pillars of the Holy Trinity” for spiritual guidance, where we mention the updated accounts of two of those pillars which are Chris Chan and Love_That_Goku. After knowing that Love_That_Goku feeds LARPers dirt, Jonn gives an internet account of what happened at Chris Chan recent trial, which means he’s gonna roam free for a little while longer, and how he might tie up his Gal Pals from high school. Zeonic mentions his accurate predictions off episode one of Sword Art Online 2 to be THE TRUTH, and mention about a guy who will be on a future podcast soon. All this and more in this weeks episode, see yea next time… (aka, stay tuned for the zinger at the end…)

It sure seems that were on some kinda Gundam bandwagon, with us talking about Gundam the Origin manga in the last episode, and now the recent release of the Origin anime. We figured now is the time to hit the bullseye with our bulky grey pre-One Year War Guntank before it grinds to a halt and we don’t care as much. So, let’s dive into Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I “Blue Eyed Casval.”

(0:00 – 52:00) Review: Mobile Suit Gundam – The Origin I “Blue Eyed Casval”: It seems that when anime gets adapted from a manga source, people seem to be up in arms about the final outcome, which is usually for the worse. However, Jonn and Zeonic believe this is a pretty good adaptation in terms that Jonn has read Vol. 5 of the manga and Zeonic has not. So to Zeonic, this is all fresh to him, where as Jonn sees it as pretty accurate and better structured than in the manga. We of course start things off with the current decay of Radioshack, which then leads us to rant about current anime fans taste in anime, what is considered really “filler” in anime, diving into the “pre” Gundam universe, and how one should watch the Gundam series with Origin now being animated. Also, Colony Drop put out their initial reaction of this OVA, and it seems their viewpoint is a bit different than ours, or try a lot.

(52:00 – 1:32:21) Closing Remarks (a.k.a. more Chris Chan talk): Jonn and Zeonic spend a good amount of time closing things out with Zeonic trip to a comic book store in Athens G.A., the card game Superfight!, Marvel movie rights, R.I.P Leonard Nimoy and R.I.P USS Ranger (aka, the aircraft carrier in Top Gun and Star Trek IV), and of course breaking down the audio recording of a past love by our favorite lolcow. All this and more in this episode…
