AoY Podcast #20 – Takahashi vs. Tomino Round 1 (Heavy Metal L-Gaim & Blue Gender Review)
Also known as: ” Hey Kayro, you hair makes the best beanbag!”
or also: “And there’s sum-sum-sum-ro-ro-robot God…”
We are finally doing another anime marathon of sorts, where for once a month, for the next couple of months (or longer maybe), we will talk about some series/shows from some of the two biggest anime directors out there, Yoshiyuki Tomino vs. Ryouske Takahashi.
We start off with our discussion of Heavy Metal L-Gaim by Tomino, where we compare and contrast between the OVA’s and TV series. We then go right into a Takahashi show from not that long ago called Blue Gender. Some of the discussions include how people can pilot a robot from a KORG machine, total 80’s fashion, subtitle issues, anime wraslin, annoying characters, how something can be almost like Starship Troopers, censorship in a TV series and much more. We also go off topic on things like recent anime start up companies, taking an early look at Funimation, DBZ side talk and other Takahashi shows we will cover down the road. All this and more in this weeks episode.
Side Note: I know I said the words “Takahashi vs. Tomino Month” in the intro, but this is gonna go on longer than that, and I ment to say segment. But, if you know our track record, you probably won’t hold that against us, which is cool. I should just edit it out, but OH WELL!

I did finish Blue Gender since we recorded this. Spoilers time. I didn’t think the whole B-Cell plot was done very well. All the B-Cells activating simultaneously and causing Miyagi to be killed at the end came across as unnecessary and rushed, like a lot of the other deaths in the series.

On me listening to the podcast, no problem. Its nice to have something I can listen to and keep up with sometimes.
I fucked up on BakaBT because I downloaded Ideon and Devilman a year ago on my old computer and never went back to it. -and now I can’t go and upload(because I don’t have it anymore) or donate(because they’re not accepting any).
More official subs would be great. I’m really excited to hear that ZZ Gundam is getting some through Daisuki. C’mon guys, ZZ needs more love. haha.

I have my Devilman OVA’s on my external drive somewhere (or there on a data DVD im sure) which we will have to cover those eventually. I would rather buy the LA Hero dub and have us review that, because its so good and cheesy.
Yea, people need to watch ZZ Gundam and take it in for themselves if its a down right terrible Gundam show that has been preached and forced down other new Gundam fans throats for so long. Its not a good series by any means, but its a fun show and does get serious later.

Definitely cover Devilman at some point. I haven’t heard the LA Hero dub, so I’ll have to check it out for sure.
Sure, ZZ starts off pretty goofy but I still enjoy it all the same. Love some of the mech designs and that we get to see more cybernewtype shenanigans. I like Judau as a pilot as well, too bad we never really see more of him outside of ZZ.
