GUEST SPOT: The Nine Hells of Anime Podcast

389845

Jonn and I were guest stars on The Nine Hells of Anime Podcast to talk about our favorite Yoshiaki Kawajiri anime OVA, Goku: Midnight Eye. This is mine and Jonn’s second attempt at reviewing this anime, because we love it that freaking much. I stated to Fino that we gotta come back if they were to ever review Crying Freeman, because damn… that is another anime I know Jonn and I will talk extensively about in detail.

AoY Podcast #27 – Halloween Special (Devilman OVA and Stella Women’s Academy Review)

Devil2

Also known as: “Akira, you gotta drink this whole bottle of Corona…”
Or also: “WHY GOD! WHY GOD! WHY GOOOOOOOOOD!”

Things get spooky for us here at the podcast, as we get to take the express elevator all the way to the Go Nagai level of hell, as we sit down to see the world of the Devilman OVA. This world is filled with punk teen friends who threaten your girlfriend with a knife, punk teen bullies that kill bunnies and kick the bucket, and more punk teens who have heavy metal raves in your dads secret basement for black masses.

After taking the last elevator ride to get out in one piece, I then tell my co-host of a world filled with anime teens playing airsoft in Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Club C-3. This was this past summer anime season Gainax show, that starts out like any typical lame anime with tropes ranging from filling it with beach episodes, bath scenes and Gainax bounces to your harem/moe hearts content. But then the show cuts that crap out about half way and gets serious about airsoft, probably just as much as people who still play it. Of course, this show has a place in my heart since I was a player of the sport at one point, long ago.

We also get to talk about things like Go Nagai material in general, 4 year olds who watch Devilman, the bad shows on Toonami, how Gundam Boy Friends is going, anime in 2013, why Narnia sucks, and much more in this weeks segment.

AoY Podcast #25 – A General Discussion Show

091012_the_pre_taped_call_in_show_t

Also known as: “FEEEEEEEEEEH FEH FEH FEHFEHFEHFEH!!!!”
As well as: “Dropped the call AHGAAAAAAAAIN!”

For this episode, we review… absolutely nothing. We decided to take this time and discuss a few things that were on our minds, and to also trash talk those we “kindly” disagree with.

Our main discussions are about two internet/Twitter peoples opinions on the anime industry, dubs vs subs, and programming opinions that we personally disagree with to the highest extent of the natural order. We also bring up how you should not treat delinquents who commit a crime, why Dragonball Evolution, Live Action Johnny Bravo  and Avatar movies are terrible (but i make a mention of a pretty good movie, Riddick) and a slew of Skype audio issues (all thanks to Jonn’s crappy NEW modem  Ex-crappy modem).

We do bring up how College life is going for us, we talk about Patlabor for a bit, and end things off with what we are keeping up with on Toonami. All this and more in this weeks segment.

AoY Podcast #24 – Takahashi vs. Tomino Round 2 (Space Runaway Ideon & SPT Layzner Review)

Also known as: “The Ide is powered by a zombie baby!”

I know its been a few episodes since our last slug fest discussion of Tomino and Takahashi shows, but were back for round 2 this time with the infamous Space Runaway Ideon and the better of mid 1980’s mecha shows, Blue Comet SPT Layzner.

Space Runaway Ideon was the very next project director Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on right after Mobile Suit Gundam. And like Gundam, it was also cut short in its episode count, sharing the same 39 episode number as Gundam which this lead to feature films being made off each series. The only difference here is, Tomino found a way not to continue Ideon… ever again!!

We then cut right on over to a show that both Jonn and I find really engaging by keeping up with the /m/subs releases, which is Blue Comet SPT Layzner by Ryouske Takahashi, This involves the Cold War stretching out to the mid 1990’s as both America and Soviet Russia have bases on the planet Mars, and how an alien invasion can mess things up. I also did a review of SPT Layzner for Regan Strong-“BAD”-blood’s own podcast Anime 82 a couple of years ago (if you wanna get to my review just skip right at the 5 hour mark… yea he made it that long…dunno why.) All this and probably some more in this weeks episode.

AoY Podcast # 23 – To-Y Review

230px-Toymanga

Also known as: “Don’t mess around with the guy in the shades in To-Y!”

We tune our strings and warm up the mics to an anime that was an OVA one hit wonder, To-Y. This was a review “on the fly,” where the fansub of this OVA was sitting in front of me and I wasn’t in the mood to watch this alone. So Jonn and I decided to give this a shot on youtube to see what this was about (without us knowing what to expect).

To-Y is a product of it’s time, or should I say, a time where animators did whatever they felt like doing to an OVA in the Japanese economy boom of 1987. I saw To-Y as a visually fun looking  55 minute music video that told a story of a band and the people around it. Where as Jonn saw it as a giant waste of time 5 minutes into our AIM conversation. Like what prompted my interest to watch this OVA in the first place, was also my discussion about Mike Toole history on his first exposure to this in the latest Colony Drop zine, by mentioning it was on an old programming block called Night Flight (in other words, GO BUY THAT THAN TO LISTEN TO US TALK ABOUT THIS ANIME!)

Depending on how you view this anime to your all knowing otaku/weeboo/fanboy logic, you might side with one of us on what we have to say about it. We also throw in a minor review of Mars of Destruction for good fun (and that “review” is about as much as we are gonna say about “that” anime). And like the usual fashion, we talk about mecha anime we have been watching, old website providers who hosted old anime websites long ago, 6th graders who did Gundam Wing comics, some mic issues and much more.

Why j-pop fans and j-punk/ funk/ grunge/ goth/ metalcore/ new wave/ etc can never co-exist at a concert.

The visual to this anime was like sticking in your 8th generation MTV music video tape from 1984 int a VCR that's about as old and on its last leg because you wonder "Hey, what did I put on this thing 30 years ago?"
