So before Dustin heads off to Animazement for another year, he has decided to put out a bonus episode where he brings on Nick from The Arcade Hunters to specifically talk about the arcade culture behind the Initial D Arcade Stage game. This of course doesn’t really happen till about 45 or so minutes into the recording, since the beginning was full of anime to arcade games and vice versa talk. They also mention subjects like Sega in general, the arcade culture between Japan and America, anime discussions, bad arcade anime, how Dustin and Nick got into Initial D, Toys R Us retail talk and so much more.

AoY Podcast #89 – South Carolina Comic Con / Anime Boston 2016 Review

3427

Also known as: “MAKE ANIME BOSTON GREAT AGAIN!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 3:25:56)

Well, convention season has once again started up, and your hosts are taking their journeys to cons opposite of the Mason Dixon line. Dustin decided to avoid the usual NashiCon this year to go with its closer and hands down “most impressive anime con” during the same weekend in April as Nashi, and that was the South Carolina Comic Con. We also have our returning co-host Daft and Cloud to talk about their time at Anime Boston.

(0:00 – 1:04:32) Con Report A: South Carolina Comic Con – But wait, why is a comic con considered the best anime con? Well there’s a simple answer, its because Dustin has seen the light that comic cons happen to cater to his anime needs than a local anime con cannot do. After finding a Dancouga, Iczer 1 and some other figures at the local comic con, these seem to be the holy grail of items that appeal to the old anime fans at heart than seeing the same anime bullcrap merch at these so called “anime conventions” that Dustin keeps going to over and over every year. Also, NashiCon didn’t have a schedule to meet Tony Oliver, so no way our podcast con traveler was gonna risk driving further out of his way for no solid autograph return. This was no lone journey, as Dustin was accompanied by Dori on the way to the con, so that made it even more fun.

In terms of Closing Remarks, Jonn and Dustin talked about how they put the hammer down on whiny cosplayers on the Anime Boston forum, which lead to some serious Donald Trump-like troll hijinks to burn some bridges with a con that maybe one day the hosts might go to. The legacy of ZeekdaPhreek shall live on. We also mention how Dustin got his own Initial D Arcade Stage cabinet, the return of Chris Chan and TCR Ghost, and much more.

(1:04:32 – 1:06:47) Podcast Promo’s – AWO seems to be getting over their tormented Initial D review, with their latest one being about Knights of Sidonia. The Daily Anime Podcast might have been quiet for…. a good while, still check them out. Come’on Jeff, WHERE DID YA GO? On the upside, Dave and Joel come out of their per-month retirement to bring you more Jojo’s, cuz that’s what the kids wanna hear.

(1:06:47 – 3:25:56) Con Report B: Anime Boston – This is clearly the longer part of this podcast, which makes up for the first part in lacking content. Speaking of hijinks, Daft decides to go to the con as currently-now-front runner Donald Trump to make sure Anime Boston is made great again. This also goes into detail on how Cloud’s Precure panel went, Daft going to panels like Bad Anime Bad and playing Evangelion pachinko machines, where to find food and how to get drunk the Daft way, the issue with the long lines at the con, dissing on Geek Nights, Toonami and cartoons talk and much more.

Music Selection:

Guest Spot: Whiskey Thursday 172

Whiskey Thursday 172 Found HERE!

Dustin stopped by on FightBait! Whiskey Thursday recently to basically, sit around and listen to the host talk about Anime Detour con, Dr. Who people who die at cons, and beer talk at the end. Actually, Dustin didn’t say much in this episode, but filled in bits when he had an open moment. The audio from Dustin was pretty crappy since he called on his phone, so maybe next time he will use Skype to call in.

Here is part two of our Toonzone AIM chat history, without any edits.. This is kind of a brief description on what you might find in this episode, which is still more talk about people we know online and more dumb stories to boot. We even mention how we killed off Notaku Diaries long ago. If you want to know what podcast we had Peter Fay on, it was this Peter Fay Episode from the last podcast Jonn and Dustin did before the AoY Podcast (plus, we also found some Peter Fay Internet 1.0 stuff on an old Gargoyles fansites). Next episode will consist of real content, which will cover comic and anime cons that happened recently, so stay tuned.

So, after saying this for over a year at this point off and on, the hosts of this podcast decided to give their backstory on how they all know each other and meet on the AOL Instant Messaging service, which the group chat function ceased on March 15th, 2016.

We are also going to add, that this and the part 2 that will come up, are completely unedited. Nothing has been censored, condensed, or rearranged to distort THE TRUTH of people that we are going to say right now do not exist… which isn’t true. The only thing done to this episode is to increase volume levels in the recording so you can hear what we have to say, that’s it.

To make a long story short, this is 2 hours of Dustin, Jonn, Daft, Josh (when his Skype was working) and Vekou talking about how we all meet online. For Dustin and Vekou, this goes back to the early 2000’s under pre-One Piece Podcast co-host Zach Nathenson before he ever watched that show and ran a small forum called Adult Swim Headquarters, which lead to Dustin joining Toonzone.net. Jonn, Josh, and Daft recollect how they got to Toonzone as well, and how all of us put up with our youthful bullcrap over a decade ago. We ramble off topics on Cartoon Network shows, comic book talk, Mac the Night commercials, and “insider baseball” for forum and chat room drama that no one needs to know that we still tell you listeners all about. If anything, at best you can get a few good laughs from it and say how horrible people we all are. It’s a fair assessment, and we can understand. See you for part 2 next time… hopefully with less Moon Man
