AoY Podcast #31 – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Arc 1 Review

Also known as: “I’m just gonna call her Arena, like Sports Arena.”
Or also: “I live my life, one quarter mile at a time…”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 1:57:01)

The time as finally come, where Zeonic decides to sit down and watch JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. After over a year of constant mentioning from his co-hosts, he decides to take the plunge into a manga/anime series filled with 60’s to 80’s prog-rock music band character names, over the top action, and the ability to ripple. All I can say is, this is pretty good stuff if you haven’t seen it yet.

Of course, we bring up other slightly-on-to-totally-off topic JoJo things such as The Fast and the Furious movies, music references in the JoJo’s series, how the JoJo manga did in the states, angry religious parties, dissing on Toon Radio, recent South Park episode talk, the amount of podcast we have recorded in our 2 and a half year podcasting lifespan, and much more. I did include a Christmas Bonus at the end of this episode, so its an extra treat to the ears.

AoY Podcast #30 – LEFTOVER PODCAST TAKE 2 (Dark Solder D n’ Pacific Rim Review)

Also known as: “It’s Always Sunny in Pacific Rim”
or: “Nah, I need you to do ANIME NOW!!!!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 1:14:11)

So we got some leftovers I have been saving for quite a while now, and it’s time I shared the stench with you guys. But sometimes, old things don’t smell so bad, or not all of it at least. We got two reviews way past their expiration date, Dark Solder D and Pacific Rim (or what I wanna call “PacRim”!!)

My Dark Solder D review was originally recorded back in December 2012 (I believe), and was submitted for the last part of Regan’s Anime 82 Mecha Madness podcast to see if he would take this live action mecha atrocity to heart. Well, he gave a brief “NO MAN, NOT GONNA HAPPEN!” on that episode, so the recording (and this post i’m writing on) just sat in the vault till it was needed. But now, that time has come.

If I told you that Dark Soldier D wasn’t offensive to the senses in some way, I would commit one of the worst crimes against humanity. With shooting giant chickens in the ass with an M60 machine gun, brains floating in jars that have speech devices, mad Russians, hooking up with a girl that steals your crap, limbs a flying and much more, you can bet your in for the 3 episode ride of your life.

We then move on to the greatest anime-to-live-action adaptation that wasn’t off an anime, which makes PacRim the best anime of 2013! Both Daft and I were on this recording back when the movie came out in theaters as we each give our own personal views on the movie (and before we got 1 star rating that I found out later that came from Daft on iTunes for some dumbass hipster reason.) Pacific Rim will release your inner child for an hour and a half, with a sense that you have a plastic robot in your hand as you watch the coolest fights break out on the big screen. With the movie out on DVD/BluRay, you should have already bought the thing by now, or you will for Christmas. Either way, get it!

This also gets us to talk about Comic book movie talk, me discussing the Wolverine movie (SPOILERS), toy talk, anime to live action talk, how PacRim is not Evangelion, “Bay”Formers talk, the marketing reasons behind 3D movies now, and much more.

Music Selection:

OP – My feelings to express Dark Solder D

EyeCatch – Best anime opening of 2013

ED – What played in my head when I saw Charlie Day on the big screen

This show has:

Well, this seems to appeal to other people tastes than mine…

I am sure fanfics of this have already started to appear on the internet by now…

Dude, I would totally be pimpin in dos things

AoY Podcast #29 – Angel’s Egg Review

Also known as: ” I have a bright yellow suit jacket, It blinds my eyes its amazing!”

Download Episode HERE! (Total Time: 1:05:47 )

This episode is another experiment of Jonn and I both going “hey, there’s anime on youtube, what do you feel like randomly reviewing?” This time I let Jonn be the judge of “pick-a-random-OVA-youtube-video-to-watch-and-let’s-see-what-this-is-about,” only to find that Jonn decided to settle on the most infamous OVA by Mamoru “Ghost-in-the-Shell-and-Patlabor-movies-are-the-better-known-things-I’ve-ever-directed” Oshii. And that most infamous title is none other than Angel’s Egg.

Angel’s Egg, to our interpretation, is one of those visual “artsy-fartsy” moving pictures that can be shown at a film festival and people would try for years to find something deep about it. I have understood this anime for a long time that this was Oshii interpretation of him denouncing his belief in Christianity. After seeing this film, I think he is the only person that can see that, because I sure as hell cannot. This film is full of long shots of landscapes, long shots of girls drinking water, long shots of people staring at nothing, shadow fish being harpooned and long shots of people sleeping… and doing really nothing else.

To our surprise, there have been some reviews about this, the good, the bad, and the deep thinking (I assure you these links go with the correct words). This also causes us to talk more about the directing career of Mamoru Oshii live action movies, as well as anime talk, stupid hipsters who don’t know what to buy, and much more.

I also wanna give a shout-out to the Anime World Order podcast for playing our promo on their most recent episode.

OP – This taps into my inner Oshii creative mind…

GUEST SPOT: The Nine Hells of Anime Podcast

389845

Jonn and I were guest stars on The Nine Hells of Anime Podcast to talk about our favorite Yoshiaki Kawajiri anime OVA, Goku: Midnight Eye. This is mine and Jonn’s second attempt at reviewing this anime, because we love it that freaking much. I stated to Fino that we gotta come back if they were to ever review Crying Freeman, because damn… that is another anime I know Jonn and I will talk extensively about in detail.

AoY Podcast #27 – Halloween Special (Devilman OVA and Stella Women’s Academy Review)

Devil2

Also known as: “Akira, you gotta drink this whole bottle of Corona…”
Or also: “WHY GOD! WHY GOD! WHY GOOOOOOOOOD!”

Things get spooky for us here at the podcast, as we get to take the express elevator all the way to the Go Nagai level of hell, as we sit down to see the world of the Devilman OVA. This world is filled with punk teen friends who threaten your girlfriend with a knife, punk teen bullies that kill bunnies and kick the bucket, and more punk teens who have heavy metal raves in your dads secret basement for black masses.

After taking the last elevator ride to get out in one piece, I then tell my co-host of a world filled with anime teens playing airsoft in Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Club C-3. This was this past summer anime season Gainax show, that starts out like any typical lame anime with tropes ranging from filling it with beach episodes, bath scenes and Gainax bounces to your harem/moe hearts content. But then the show cuts that crap out about half way and gets serious about airsoft, probably just as much as people who still play it. Of course, this show has a place in my heart since I was a player of the sport at one point, long ago.

We also get to talk about things like Go Nagai material in general, 4 year olds who watch Devilman, the bad shows on Toonami, how Gundam Boy Friends is going, anime in 2013, why Narnia sucks, and much more in this weeks segment.
